5th Sunday of Easter – 19th May 2019
Today – Second collection for the Education of Future Priests rescheduled from last weekend.
Special collection the Missionary Endeavour of the Diocese next Sunday (Gift Aid)
I wonder, do you consider yourself to be a ‘born again’ Christian? I guess most of us would not describe ourselves in that way as the term has been somewhat besmirched by overzealous people who have either come to faith later in life, or somehow re-discovered it as an adult after a period in the doldrums. It has often been used as a way of describing people who are on fire in some way with the Spirit and highly motivated in their living out of the command to “Go and make disciples”.
However, in reality, through our baptism we are all reborn to eternal life and come to share in the here and now the blessings of the coming Kingdom of the Lord. As our opening prayer has it today we ask Almighty God to accomplish within us the Paschal Mystery so that we may bear much fruit even as we are made new.
What does ‘accomplishing the Paschal Mystery’ mean? It has to do with our living in love in the same manner as Christ and letting his death and resurrection so change us that we become ‘little christs’ in our own lives and places. In so far as Christ’s love is seen in action within us will the kingdom of God become apparent to those we hope to bring to faith in Jesus.

At the end of mass on Sunday and throughout Easter we will sing the Regina Caeli (in English) as follows:
Joy to thee, O Queen of Heaven. Alleluia!
He whom Thou wast meet to bear. Alleluia!
As He promised hath arisen. Alleluia!
Pour for us to God thy prayer. Alleluia!
- Rejoice and be glad, O Virgin Mary, alleluia.
- For the Lord has truly risen, alleluia.
Let us pray.
O God, who through the resurrection of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, brought joy to the whole world; grant, we beseech You, that through His Mother, the Virgin Mary, we may obtain the joys of everlasting life. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
